Forklifts are a type of industrial truck that is typically used to move a variety of materials. While these machines are quite handy and can serve a wide range of purposes in almost any type of industrial setting, they can also be quite dangerous. Forklifts are involved in the majority of the most commonly occurring types of construction accidents. Every year, more than twenty thousand workers sustain serious injuries from forklifts in the United States. Over one hundred workers are killed as a result of forklift accidents.
In an effort to reduce the potential for serious forklift accidents employers should take the following steps: only allow properly trained operators to use forklifts, always adequately maintain forklifts, and always keep the areas where forklifts operate free of excess items, people, and obstructions. Fellow workers can further contribute to safety by: performing routine checks of the forklift, not operating the forklift unless authorized by the company, making sure loads are not too heavy and properly stacked, never using the forklift to transport people, not using the forklift in place of a ladder or other type of scaffolding, being aware of the stability of the vehicle, and being aware of their personal surroundings such as other people, uneven floors, floor surfaces, power lines, corners, loading dock locations, doorway heights, etc. Furthermore, OSHA requires all operators to be at least eighteen years old.
Lack of Proper Maintenance: Failing to service the major components of the forklift, such as the steering, brakes, hydraulic parts, or the transmission can lead to an accident. Unreasonable Work Pace: Setting a work pace that is too high, or creating a stressful work environment can lead to workers rushing, which increases the chances of an accident. Lack of Safety Devices: Removing safety devices, or having safety devices that are not properly functioning can be a recipe for disaster. For example, if the forklifts rollover protection is not engaged or not functioning correctly the operator can be thrown from the machine or pinned underneath if it should over turn.
There are different ways to move hay using a forklift. Some farmers "ram" the forks right into the hay bale or barrel, but this method generally causes damage to the hay and is not recommended. Other farmers use the forklift to lift the hay up with rope after tying the hay to the forks. Another method is to construct an add-on for the forklift, mounting a metal plate onto the forks to create a sturdy platform for the hay, making the lifting, carrying, and transporting process that much simpler. 2. Lifting and Moving Heavy Items Forklifts can also be used on a farm to lift, carry, and transport a wide variety of common large and heavy items, in addition to hay bales and barrels. Such items can include:· farm equipment · large or heavy farming tools and supplies · smaller pieces of machinery · produce · animal feed · bulk bags · fencing · dead animals.
